Usher. We met in a moment of serendipity, when Chelsy unexpectedly moved into the apartment above mine in the tiny town of Chestertown, Maryland. Shortly, and within months of each other, we both moved from the area but not without first having formed a close friendship. Chelsy radically changed her life by joining the United States Coast Guard, while I moved to Memphis, Tennessee to take on the position of Area Head of Photography at Memphis College of Art. One evening, I received a late night and rather lonely “what are you up to” text message from Chelsy, who had been relocated to a patrol boat in San Diego, California. Also missing her, I sent a cell phone image back. The image contained half of my face and half of my pillow, because, what I had been “up to” was sleeping. Nearly simultaneously, the image was returned, only this time it was Chelsy’s face on her own pillow hundreds of miles away. It seemed, despite our distance, our thoughts were not far from one another’s. This exchange was the impetus for a body of work to catalog what were now disparate lives using our cell phones as the means. One half of the image always contains a bisection of our face and the other the background of our lives as we move through them. The body of work has been collected as a single digital file, 40 inches tall by just over 50 feet in length. In addition, diptychs are pulled out of the sequence, they are compelling pairings based more on aesthetic concerns than happenings or timing. At times our faces join to make one, and in others a simple comparison of side-by-side gazes and backgrounds exists. The body of work began in mid-October of 2006 and contains 1630 images, the cataloging of images ended exactly one year from its accidental beginning. Presence, absence, the residue that is left behind by a life lived and perhaps even a lifetime lost and forgotten. In my “half” a single line of text repeats on a lavender surface and yet the author’s identity is inconclusive, the viewer is left to determine whether they are studying the author or perhaps they are the authors themselves. The text begins and ends in specificity and yet, pools and stretches across a vast space, at times muddled and at times clear – not unlike the span of a lifetime. What begins as uttered words are removed from a context left for the viewer to determine and begins to take shape and form only to come to rest in a sea of changing images which are steeped in the nostalgia of no personal consequence. With Ciglar’s “half” notions of presence are seen on the tumbled sheets in several narrow beds, apposing dialogues come to the surface: has the bed been vacant long, are the sheets still warm from the bodies that molded them… This is posed with a sense of time that is left uncertain in the mind of the viewer, pages of a book still moving in the breeze evoke a sense that the person is soon to return and yet perhaps the person is long gone and we are only witness to the memory of their ever being there. In both pieces which come together to frame memories of what remains both physically and metaphorically we perhaps are left with questions rather than answers – generalizations rather than specifics. It speaks to the residue of people forgotten – either sender or receiver no longer here to put meaning to time and place of text and image. On the one hand I am utilizing the postcards that my great-grandfather’s company produced and on the other I am using images and correspondence which are only connected by my own invention. Postcards are the sound-bites or snapshots of the written language… “wish you were here”, “many happy returns of the day”, “missing you”. Though postcards communicate, they don’t speak to the depth of substance to perhaps anyone but the writer or recipient. However, when interlaced with imagery, the fragmented text takes on new and convoluted meanings with only our imagination to cap its possibilities. These contrasting images sit side by side with a thin line painted across their surface, drawing imagined connections. The images themselves reinforce the concepts of memory and often use mnemonic elements and notions of artifact to represent an underlying story, which touches on the personal while still attempting the collective. I combine photographs I’ve made of empty places – spaces once inhabited or currently inhabited but with no one present – with found photographs of times that no longer exist – images that are empty of personal memory – and then paint a thin line to draw a literal point of connection from one image to the next. The line, like a strand of DNA, ties the images, separated by generations, to one another. The line is often initiated in the found photograph by pointing to the senses – taste, smell, touch, sound – to a point in the contemporary image that speaks to the residues left behind by current or past inhabitants. The Holding series is made of five “chapters”, each dedicated to a person of influence in my life which serves to establish place, lineage, and narrative in each chapter. Leaning on the notion of the “book” as narrative, chapters are titled in “honor of” and each diptych’s title utilizes the complexity of language to help navigate the viewer to underlying connections and conundrums – the narratives of the diptychs are often as rich as they are convoluted. Each “chapter’s” photographs are made in the location of the honoree’s “home” and while appropriated photographs are collected in the same location, they are not necessarily of that place. I was not a beach goer as a teenager. So when I found myself moving to the Jersey Shore I didn’t think I would be so taken (so quickly) by the beach and the ocean at the end of my street. One summer of playing in the waves and I was totally and completely enchanted by them, still a little frightened – but a little fear is good in the face of a powerful force like mother nature. One fall morning I woke up to the densest fog I had ever seen – Hurricane Hanna was on her way. My dog, Jonah, and I walked to the beach where we were confronted by the largest “wall” of white I had ever seen – I could barely make out where the beach, ocean and sky met – gleefully I took out my cellphone to take photos of these subtle shades, but was at first disappointed and then excited by the limitations of my iPhone’s ability to “white balance”. Every image was a wild shade of blue, green, purple or pink; not one represented what I was seeing. That winter, it snowed, not little storms but big swirling snow storms – I hadn’t seen snow like that in almost three years (I had been living in the south). I immediately went back to my beach to experience, snow, salt, water and sand… this time I went with my brand new Nikon D300 and while I was thrilled with this camera’s ability to “white balance”, I realized that it was somewhere between truth and fiction that my experience of the beach and it’s waves existed. “Hanna to Snow” is an attempt at the emotive – what I felt, but also what I saw, while walking the shore of Asbury Park, New Jersey. The diptychs are a comparison of emotions, technology, weather and time. The single images are study of the ocean. My mother chose to undergo genetic counseling and tested positive for the BRCA1 gene mutation. In her mid-30’s before such testing was available she made the then unorthodox decision to have her ovaries removed after her own mother died of ovarian cancer. She learned that BRCA1, also known as the breast cancer gene, not only carried a high risk of ovarian cancer but increased her chances of developing breast cancer by 85% – almost seven times the normal rate. These contrasting images sit side by side with a thin line painted across their surface, drawing imagined connections. I combine photographs I’ve made of empty places – spaces once inhabited or currently inhabited but with no one present – with found photographs of times that no longer exist – images that are empty of personal memory – and then paint a thin line to draw a literal point of connection from one image to the next. The line, like a strand of DNA, ties the images, separated by generations, to one another. The line is often initiated in the found photograph by pointing to the senses – taste, smell, touch, sound – to a point in the contemporary image that speaks to the residues left behind by current or past inhabitants. I fell in love with it instantly. It made me feel like a princess. To justify its purchase, I convinced myself I would be invited to or host the perfect event for this perfect skirt. The event never happened but I did put my skirt on every month or so and twirled about until I found myself in the same make believe land of my childhood and the countless stories read to me as a little girl. My work has always been about memory; whether I am taking an image to capture a memory or whether I am constructing an image to imply a fictionalized memory or a universal memory by the utilization of common themes. This work is really no different. The skirt becomes the vehicle to the memory, the characters our own favorites. As adults we take on the characters of our youth without entering the world of the child. Props are interpreted from the adult mind into the visions of childhood. The representation of each character is a collaborative effort. The skirt is a constant but both the person assuming the identity of the character and I decide on the props that define the character. The location is intended to reference the “enchanted forest” and stylistically the images conjure classic portraiture. When I made my plans to travel to its shore it was not the town I wanted to explore but the essence of the scenes I might experience on its beaches. It was to these same sands and this same sea that J.M.W. Turner and T.S. Eliot turned when they needed to call the muses for inspiration. In need of a bit respite and with the intention to create a very different body of work, I followed in their footsteps on a pilgrimage of sorts. I found myself on the English coast with predictably no sun, no warmth, and unexpectedly virtually no one on its beaches. Plans seemingly ruined by a near constant rain and the uninspiring gray on gray sea and sky, I turned inward. I explored my little borrowed flat filled with color and collections and found both the odd and the delightful. Everyday I was determined to return to the promenade and down to the sands to photograph the same gray on gray sea and sky occasionally marked by dulled green or blue. My exterior wanderings mirrored my mind and mood. The cobwebs remained. The doldrums failed to lift. As the hours and days moved ever onward, I discovered that my internal space had become my muse. The odd and the delightful aspects of my own quiet and often lonely self could be found within each frame. Beginning in Italy and made her way through France, Monaco, Switzerland, Germany, and Belgium. Her album of this voyage was left to me in 2013; I have poured over its photos, examined their details, studied her handwriting - trying to find her story. I determined that to find her, I had to follow in her footsteps; I wanted to seek out the ‘residue’ she may have left behind; I wanted to hear the whispers of her voice that might still echo in these places. She was there before both world wars, she was there at the same time that most of my ancestors were contemplating leaving. I retraced much of her physical path through Europe in order to create a body of work responding to her photographs and words.
