Many years ago I found a beautiful skirt in a second hand shop in Philadelphia. I fell in love with it instantly. It made me feel like a princess. To justify its purchase, I convinced myself I would be invited to or host the perfect event for this perfect skirt.
The event never happened but I did put my skirt on every month or so and twirled about until I found myself in the same make believe land of my childhood and the countless stories read to me as a little girl.
My work has always been about memory; whether I am taking an image to capture a memory or whether I am constructing an image to imply a fictionalized memory or a universal memory by the utilization of common themes. This work is really no different.
The skirt becomes the vehicle to the memory, the characters our own favorites. As adults we take on the characters of our youth without entering the world of the child. Props are interpreted from the adult mind into the visions of childhood. The representation of each character is a collaborative effort. The skirt is a constant but both the person assuming the identity of the character and I decide on the props that define the character. The location is intended to reference the “enchanted forest” and stylistically the images conjure classic portraiture. This ongoing series began over ten years ago and will continue until it reaches the story’s end.
